NOTE: This publication is entirely in the French language.
This playground of the rich and famous puts on quite a show every year for Carnaval and has been doing so for centuries! In the year 1294, Charles Anjou, the Count of Provence, wrote of the "joyous days of Carnival". In 1873, a Committee (Comite des Fetes) headed by M. Andriot Saetone and by Alexis Mossa (and later by his son Gustav Adolf Mossa) was created to run the Carnival. At that time, a parade, satirical floats, a masquerade, and competitions were added to the event. The program I am selling is marked on the cover "Carnaval XLVI" (see the vertically oriented lettering on the front cover), which may correlate with the inaugural event of 1873 or 1874. [If a few years were missed due to World War I, then 1924 might well have been the 46th Annual Carnaval organized by the Committee.]
This program has wonderful photos and graphics, capturing the true spirit of the event. It also has many terrific period advertisements, particularly for swanky hotels on the French Riviera. And there are also references to other forms of entertainment afforded the visitors (e.g. see the photos related to horse racing and pigeon shooting).
Please see above for complete description of condition and photos. (Condition is fairly good for the age and delicate nature of the publication, but does have some issues, as explained above.) Sold as is.
